MY REPORT

The play was interrupted by the rain after the first 10 minutes, so this report is short.

I was very curious and excited to see a play at the Open Air Theatre, finally. When I planned my holiday, I saw I had a free day in London to fill with theatre. So I decided to book for Pride And Prejudice on Saturday afternoon, even if I’m not a reader of Jane Austen. Some Twitter friends told me how much they loved that novel and I was also glad to see Mari Izzard from RSC Dream 2016 on stage again. But the week-end, cloudy so far, turned worse and I had little chances to see it in full already when I left my hotel.

Anyway, I went to the theatre in a hurry, because I made efforts in finding it at the centre of the wide Regent’s Park, but the staff let me enter inside and reach my seat. They were a bit in late, so I didn’t miss the beginning. It was raining slowly, but people were sitting patiently, wearing their raincoats. The cast came out, in beautiful Summer clothes in early 19th Century’s style and started to tell their lines. The young Bennet girls were full of energy and I already found very nice their mother Mrs. Bennet. The rain and the peculiar situation gave me chills: it was so exciting to see theatre that way! I almost got tears in my eyes! It never happened before!

But as soon as Felicity Montagu aka Mrs. Bennet was going to tell her lines from her chair, one member of the staff came on stage and told her the show was over. Just few second before, I heard some “Oh no!” coming from the audience. I believe that people would have kept on watching the play, but everyone left the theatre understanding the situation. For sure they got used to the weather ruining the performances.

At the bar outside the theatre, everyone got a card to see a show another time. What a pity, though! I wonder when will I get a chance to go there again…

I can’t comment the staging and the acting, of course, but the play looked nice. I took consolation only taking some pictures of the theatre under the rain.

The play is on tour in the UK. See the official site below.
