MY FAVORITE TV SERIES
Usually I prefer to watch UK series the most. Often US screenwriters ruin me the series with too many season and stupid characters. But I like some.
I’ll dedicate to my favorite a page. I add links to the respective Imdb pages.
A FINE ROMANCE – Not sure if it ever came on Italian tv. I found it out because I saw Richard Warwick and Judi Dench in the cast list. So I bought the DVD box of the four seasons. Pity they don’t have extras or subtitles, being an old series, but it’s quite understandable. The four main characters are exhilarating and lovely! It will deserve a proper page, soon.
ABSOLUTELY FABULOUS – I saw just few episodes when it was on a satellite channel, but I liked the idea of two grumpy and cynical old friends, women for once, and the peculiar family of one of them, where the daughter is more “squared” and conventional than the mother.
ALL CREATURES GREAT AND SMALL – I saw it ages ago on Rai tv, it’s a lovely story of vets and the country where they work, from James Herriot’s novels.
BILLY LIAR – I was a child when my family used to watch to it, so I remember very little, but the opening theme I had in a music cassette and the face of the protagonist. TV didn’t air it for ages, but it’s still one of my family’s “legends”, so it can enter in this list.

RUIN ME A SERIES!
Looks like some screenwriters like to ruin a good idea. And yet, some of these below are strangely in my “favorites” list, too.
BROTHERS & SISTERS – Not really ruined, because there are some great episodes and characters, but from the 3rd season, they wanted to add more twists to the story, so introduced an useless true-half brother Ryan, full of anger against the Walkers, who stayed just for few episodes, while I rather loved the part when Rebecca came out from the shadow and everybody found out she was the Walkers’ step-sister and the following development of her story. They gave her a new life making of her Justin’s girlfriend, which I didn’t like anymore. And they seemed to get tired with Tommy and Saul (never characters I liked much, to say the truth): the first went crazy and run away from his family and country, the second, a womanizer, is turned in gay and became HIV positive. You know how much I like gay character, but uncle’s transformation makes nosense to me. Leave me just Kevin and Scotty, if you please!
FRIENDS – I hated it at the beginning. The first time it came on Italian satellite channel, I didn’t watch from the beginning. So when I run on it from time to time, I didn’t get the gags and found the characters very stupid. Maybe it was the dubbing’s fault, too. And I can’t stand silly superficial characters in US series, the American seem to love so much, and fake laughters every 30 seconds, so I found the whole thing irritating. I only started to like it when they gave the funniest scenes to Rachel and Chandler, the crosstalks between them are the best in the whole story! So at the end I watched all the seasons to the sixt just because of them. There are great moments from all the six friends, of course, but I find offensive, as Italian, how they portrayed Joey Tribbiani and his family, and ten seasons are far too much. After the fifth, it lose pungency and got only a long list of banal gags. Became a bit better again in season ten. But finally it went to an end.
GILMORE GIRLS – At the beginning, the plot couldn’t be better and took me immediately. A young mother gave birth to a baby girl and tried to keep her indipendence from her rich family and to feed her daughter not only with food, but also with her valours. Is also maybe the first series where the two main characters got a book in their hands most of the time! Grow up as a teenager, the girl meets his grandparents and the mother fights to keep her away from their influence, with no success: after many hard years helping Rory with her dream to study at Harvard, nothing goes as they expected. Is interesting seeing Rory growing up and making mistakes a teenager often does. And Lorelai understanding is not all roses being a mother. But, here where Gilmore Girls becomes a mess. It’s a real pity the author, a woman with a silly pretentious hat, as we see in the extras, ruined most of the story with lot of uneccessary, irritating secondary characters (first of all, the stupid Kirk), a village which doesn’t seem real with shops that appear here and there only to show a character Rory can’t stand, irritating boyfriends (Lorelai refuses to marry the only nice one) and friends. And, worst of all, we see Lorelai losing the battle and getting a very posh daughter, who seemed to make the difference between lot of teenagers and then young people on TV at the beginning, but she’s taken by the dark side of her grandparents’ life, chooses Yale instead of Harvard, find a stupid rich boyfriend who, oh wait, is not that posh, “he’s a good lad at the end”. They can’t convince me! And Lorelai gets married with Luke, her longtime friend of course, the most irritating man in a series! So, what’s the point of this story if everything becomes conventional?
I’M SORRY, BUT I CAN’T MAKE IT!
I’ve tried, but despite one ore more interesting elements in the cast and good reviews and opinions all around, these series are definitely not for me.
CALL THE MIDWIFE – The good cast, Jessica Raine between all, and the idea that the British can make great series, weren’t good reasons enought to me to watch more episodes of this series. Nothing personal. After the first two episodes, which arrived to Italian tv, I immediately understood this series is not for me. It got “exclusively feminine” plot for my tastes.
STRIKE BACK – I was excited by the announcement of this new series with Richard Armitage, so I watched the usual first two episodes. But no: not my cup of tea and too few Richard in it!
MANHATTAN – I watch it the same from time to time because I’m interested in the story of the atomic bomb, I rather the character of Charlie Isaacs, but this series isn’t taking me much really. No much appeal. It can be just me, maybe.
